PFAS chemicals stick around forever<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nPFAS (short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have earned the nickname \u201cforever chemicals\u201d because they stick around, quite literally, forever. They\u2019re man-made and made to last \u2014 meaning that when they inevitably seep out into the environment, they stay there, accumulating both in volume and in the level of danger they pose to our health.<\/span>\r\n\r\nSo, when these chemicals get taken up by food crops via one of the several \u201cwidely used\u201d pesticides that have been found to contain PFAS, they have a good chance of making their way to the grocery store \u2014 and eventually into our bodies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has detected them in fruits and vegetables and yet hasn\u2019t established any limits.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThis is an urgent public health threat \u2014 and in order to get local, state, federal and corporate decision-makers to start addressing PFAS contamination head-on, we need to keep raising our voices by the thousands to call for action.<\/span>\r\n

It\u2019s time to ban toxic PFAS<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nBack in June, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tightened its <\/span>advisory health limit<\/span><\/a> of one type of PFAS, PFOS, in drinking water to just 0.02 parts per trillion (ppt) \u2014 a level so low that it suggests no amount of exposure to the compound is safe.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe EPA has known about PFAS contamination in pesticides (one test estimated the level of a particular PFAS compound to be 19 <\/span>million<\/span><\/i> ppt) for nearly two years. But the agency has been inexplicably slow to act.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe good news: We\u2019re seeing in real time how the action and advocacy of citizens like you is forcing more decision-makers to start paying attention.<\/b>\r\n\r\nAfter we helped win a commitment from Burger King to stop using PFAS in its food wrappers, what\u2019s stopping us from getting the FDA to set standards for PFAS levels in all our food? And after 48,000 Americans called on Columbia Sportswear to get PFAS out of its outdoor gear, who says we can\u2019t add thousands more voices in the months ahead, making our call impossible to ignore for manufacturers of all types?<\/span>\r\n\r\nThat\u2019s in addition to significant progress we\u2019ve made at the legislative level, with more states banning PFAS from various consumer products
