Susan Eggman\u2019s (Stockton) Right to Repair Act, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB244\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 244<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sending this landmark legislation to the full state Senate for further deliberation. The bill aims to significantly expand Californians' access to the necessary parts, tools, and service information required for repairing consumer electronics and appliances.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcoming this legislative hurdle represents a major triumph for the hundreds of advocates, repair businesses and consumers supporting Right to Repair. The Senate Appropriations Committee has quietly killed similar bills over the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/california\/media-center\/california-right-repair-bill-dies-senate-committee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">past<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/california\/media-center\/statement-california-state-senate-committee-ices-bill-that-would-help-hospitals-patients\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> years after intense industry lobbying efforts against their passage.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past year, bills guaranteeing the Right to Repair have become law both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/articles\/right-to-repair-in-2022-what-happened-in-new-york-and-our-top-accomplishments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/updates\/colorado-tractor-right-to-repair-signed-into-law\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while in Minnesota, the most comprehensive Right to Repair bill to date has passed both state houses and awaits Gov. Tim Walz\u2019s signature. In total, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/updates\/28-states-file-right-to-repair-legislation-and-other-repair-updates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have considered or are considering similar legislation in 2023. Passing SB 244 in California, the home of Silicon Valley, will likely further energize the Right to Repair movement nationwide.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>In response, CALPIRG State Director <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/california\/people\/jenn-engstrom\/\"><b>Jenn Engstrom<\/b><\/a><b> issued the following statement:<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight to Repair is an idea whose time has come, and California is now one step closer to guaranteeing consumers\u2019 rights to fix their own products. This is a huge victory for anyone who's ever been faced with limited options when their phone, fridge or other household electronics break down.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis key victory would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the diverse coalition of advocates, repair businesses, and consumers across California who support SB 244. This coalition includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/california\/updates\/82-repair-shops-sign-letter-in-support-of-right-to-repair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">82 independent repair shops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/california\/updates\/106-local-elected-officials-submit-letter-in-support-of-right-to-repair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">109 local elected officials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/california\/updates\/49-environmental-organizations-sign-letter-to-support-right-to-repair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 environmental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and consumer groups, and various other recyclers, school boards and law professors.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCALPIRG and our coalition of passionate advocates will continue fighting for SB 244 as it heads to the Senate floor.
