Sponsored by Representatives Bacon and Vigil and Senators Hinrichsen and Winter, the new law will give local transit agencies throughout the state more flexibility when implementing their 2023 ozone season transit grant programs. These programs are designed to offer transit at no cost for 30 days or more, enticing people out of their cars during a time when harmful ozone air pollution is highest.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By allowing use of the grants for increasing transit service and raising awareness about the program, the new law is expected to maximize the impact of the \u201czero fare\u201d or \u201cfare free\u201d months transit agencies across the state are planning for this year. These fare fare periods \u2013 when transit is available to the public completely free of charge \u2013 build on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/colorado\/foundation\/articles\/rtds-fare-free-august-was-a-big-success-giving-us-momentum-to-improve-transit-across-the-denver-region\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">success of such programs in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new law also gives local transit agencies tools to raise money for transit service, opening the possibility for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/colorado\/foundation\/resources\/the-alliance-to-transform-transportation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transformational improvements to public transit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the future.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing pollution from the transportation sector is among the nine actions in CoPIRG\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/colorado\/articles\/2023-ozone-legislative-agenda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozone Agenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a package of policy ideas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that address harmful ozone pollution across multiple sectors \u2013 from lawn and garden equipment to transportation to oil &amp; gas and more.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, Colorado has suffered from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/sota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the highest ozone pollution in the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Breathing ozone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ozone-pollution-and-your-patients-health\/health-effects-ozone-general-population\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful health effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including lung damage, worsening of existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(22)00093-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span
