Cooking with gas releases pollutants into our homes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ije\/article\/42\/6\/1724\/737113\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can lead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the development of asthma, especially in children, and worsen symptoms for those with preexisting respiratory illnesses.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kicking-the-Gas-Habit-How-Gas-is-Harming-our-Health.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the effects of using a gas stove around kids to those of second-hand smoke exposure.\u00a0 Just running a gas stove for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp.1306673\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one hour can lead to unsafe pollutant levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During the holidays, many Americans cook for far longer than one hour\u2014 with the stove and oven on for hours. An indoor air quality <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indoorchem.org\/projects\/homechem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted in 2018 by HomeChem found that pollution levels in a home while cooking a Thanksgiving meal briefly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2019\/04\/08\/the-hidden-air-pollution-in-our-homes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exceeded those of the world\u2019s most polluted cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas stoves work by combusting methane gas, which when burned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp.122-a27\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emits <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide, in addition to smaller amounts of formaldehyde and particulate matter. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/natural-gas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methane gas is colorless, odorless and explosive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so leaks present a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/maryland\/foundation\/resources\/methane-gas-leaks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safety risk.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A sulfur-based chemical called mercaptan has to be added to make it smell so leaks can be easily detected. While exposure to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/resources\/fact-sheets\/formaldehyde\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formaldehyde <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and particulate matter can result in nose, throat and lung irritation and aggravated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/health-and-environmental-effects-particulate-matter-pm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the two most concerning pollutants when it comes to health are nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nitrogen dioxide:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/indoor-air-pollution-the-link-between-climate-and-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gas stoves have been shown to emit levels of NO2 that the EPA has ruled illegal outdoors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide, even at low levels for a short time frame, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\/nitrogen-dioxides-impact-indoor-air-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can worsen symptoms of asthma and other respiratory illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The developing lungs of children are especially vulnerable. Exposure to NO2 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ije\/article\/42\/6\/1724\/737113\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases the likelihood of a child developing asthma symptoms by 42%, and the odds of a lifetime diagnosis by 24%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/466363\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found asthma flare-ups were directly related to high concentrations of NO2. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kicking-the-Gas-Habit-How-Gas-is-Harming-our-Health.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that the effect of a gas stove on a child with asthma is comparable to the impacts of secondhand smoke from living with a smoker.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Carbon monoxide:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory simulation found that running a gas stove for just one hour with no ventilation could raise indoor concentrations of carbon monoxide by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp.1306673\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3,000 parts per billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which far exceeds health-based standards. Short term exposure to carbon monoxide can result in negative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthlinkbc.ca\/search?kw=health+topics+hw193731\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health impacts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including memory loss, dizziness, headaches and seizures, while more severe exposure can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, loss of consciousness, permanent brain damage and death.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>"},{"title":"Leaks, explosions and other dangers","content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methane gas infrastructure has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/maryland\/foundation\/resources\/methane-gas-leaks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prone to leaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, endangering communities and the environment. A gas pipeline incident occurs somewhere in the U.S. approximately every 40 hours. In fact, we know that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usdev.pirg-test.com\/feature\/usp\/methane-gas-leaks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,595 gas pipeline incidents occurred<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2010 to 2021 \u2013 and those are just the leaks that were reported to the federal government. The total number is much higher.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Maryland there have been major gas explosions in communities across the state including:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, a gas explosion at the Flower Branch apartment building in Silver Spring, just outside Washington, D.C., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/montgomery-county\/2019\/04\/ntsb-says-communication-gap-may-have-contributed-to-fatal-md-apartment-blast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed seven people and injured 65 others<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after a device to regulate the flow of gas into the building failed, causing gas to build up for several hours before it was ignited.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An August 2019 explosion in Columbia, Maryland, destroyed a shopping center,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/baltimore.cbslocal.com\/2021\/03\/08\/18-months-after-columbia-gas-explosion-one-of-first-tenants-moves-back-in\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dislocating 20 businesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The explosion occurred outside business hours, averting the potential for significant loss of life.
