To achieve that goal, federal, state and local governments should enact policies and programs that incentivize shifting to a \u201ccircular\u201d or \u201cclosed-loop\u201d economy in which less is consumed and all materials are reused, recycled and composted in a continuous cycle.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field-collection-container clearfix\"><div class=\"field field-name-field-find-out-more-link field-type-field-collection field-label-hidden\">\r\n\r\n  \r\n  \r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/body><\/html>","":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<html><body><div class=\"field-collection-view clearfix\"> <img src=\"\/sites\/pirg\/modules\/pirg_custom\/js\/spacer.gif\" alt=\"tab\" class=\"tab-image\"><div class=\"panel-content\">\r\n  <div class=\"overlay\">\r\n\t<div class=\"field field-name-field-section-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\r\n\r\n  \r\n  <p><strong>The U.S. produces more than 12% of the planet\u2019s trash, though it is home to only 4% of the world\u2019s population.\u00a0<a id=\"\" href=\"#ftn1\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul><li>In 2018 alone, the U.S. threw out over 292 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) \u2013 the materials discarded by homes, businesses and institutions, such as universities and libraries.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>Americans throw out 4.9 pounds of trash per person every day \u2013 that\u2019s nearly\u00a0<strong>1,800<\/strong><strong>\u00a0pounds of materials per American every year<\/strong>.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>The majority of waste (62%) discarded by homes and businesses in the U.S. is ultimately dumped into landfills or burned in incinerators.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul><p><strong>More than 91% of plastic was landfilled or incinerated in 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Every 15.5 hours, Americans throw out enough plastic to fill the largest NFL stadium in the country, AT&T Stadium (the home of the Dallas Cowboys), and the pile grows larger every year.<\/p>\r\n<p>Our trash leads to even more waste than we see. The products we use and dispose of are created by processes like mining and manufacturing, which generate far more, and far more dangerous, waste.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>America\u2019s garbage largely consists of goods that are used only briefly.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Over 28% of all U.S. garbage is packaging, amounting to 82 million tons of material that is typically thrown out after a product is purchased or used.<\/p>\r\n<p>Nondurable goods, such as clothing and newspaper, account for 17.3% of U.S. garbage, with yard trimmings (12.1%) and food (21.6%) accounting for a substantial share as well.<\/p>\r\n<p>The remainder (19.5%) of what homes and businesses throw out is made up of durable goods, like furniture and appliances, many of which could be repaired or repurposed, or have their materials recycled for other uses.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"media media-element-container media-\"><img width=\"1600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0.jpg\" class=\"migrate-embed\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-1536x768.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-250x125.jpg 250w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-1000x500.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/dev.tpin-test.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tia-pie-charts3_0-1500x750.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><div id=\"file-85246\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg\">\r\n\r\n  \r\n  \r\n  <div class=\"content\">\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n  \r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13.008px;\"><br><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>America\u2019s linear material economy, where materials are extracted, made into goods, and disposed of, is a one-way street that creates massive environmental and public health impacts.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul><li><strong>Global warming pollution<\/strong>: Roughly 42% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are created at every stage of the process: extracting resources, producing goods, disposing of waste, and transporting materials.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Air pollution:<\/strong>\u00a0Incinerator emissions include heavy metals and mercury, a neurotoxin that impairs brain function, as well as cancer-causing pollutants like dioxin, one of the most toxic substances known to humanity.\u00a0The extraction and production activities that support the linear material economy also cause environmental degradation, air pollution and water contamination.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Water contamination<\/strong>: Leachate from landfills can escape into the environment and threaten drinking water supplies.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Ocean pollution<\/strong>: An estimated 16.5 million tons of plastic washes into the world\u2019s oceans every year.\u00a0This plastic persists for hundreds of years and can kill marine animals by entangling them, poisoning them or blocking their digestive tracts.\u00a0Marine debris is considered one of the great threats to biodiversity.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Wasted natural resources<\/strong>: It would take 321 million trees to produce the amount of paper that was landfilled or burned in the U.S. in 2018 alone.\u00a0Thirty million acres of cropland, roughly the area of Pennsylvania, is farmed each year for food that is wasted in the U.S.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul><p><strong>America\u2019s system of consumption and disposal encourages and incentivizes waste.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Society bears most of the costs and burdens of waste \u2013 not the producers and consumers who create it \u2013 removing incentives for change.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul><li>Producers have few direct incentives to build products to last, to make them easy to repair, to use less packaging, or to make their goods or packaging easy to reuse, recycle or compost. reusing, refurbishing and repairing everything possible; and recycling or composting all remaining materials.<\/p>\r\n<p>By taking the following steps, the U.S. can incentivize the shift to a circular economy in which zero waste is created.
