In fact, lead is even contaminating drinking water in schools and preschools \u2014 flowing from fountains and faucets where our kids drink water every day.\r\n\r\n<strong>Lead is contaminating drinking water at our schools<\/strong>\r\nAs more schools test their water for lead, they are finding widespread contamination. This health threat is present in all kinds of schools \u2014 including those in rural towns, major cities and affluent suburbs. That\u2019s because until 2014, national standards allowed fountains, faucets, pipes and plumbing to contain a significant amount of lead. (Even <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/11\/06\/nsf-61-lead-from-a-new-lead-free-brass-faucet\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=edf-health_none_upd_hlth&amp;utm_medium=social-media&amp;utm_id=1541515990\">some post-2014 faucets<\/a> can cause contamination.) And wherever lead comes in contact with water, there is a risk of contamination.\r\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-section-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\r\n\r\nFor child care centers and small school buildings, the pipe bringing water in from the street might also be made of lead. Moreover, <a href=\"https:\/\/voicesforhealthykids.org\/assets\/resources\/water-access-in-schools-fast-facts---february-2020-1582746312.pdf\">kids tend to drink more water<\/a> when they have access to hydration stations, so there\u2019s an added health benefit to this solution. These hydration stations should be installed at a ratio of 1 per 100 students and staff. They should have filters certified to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-12\/documents\/consumer_tool_for_identifying_drinking_water_filters_certified_to_reduce_lead.pdf\">NSF\/ANSI standards 53 for lead reduction and 42 for fine particulate<\/a>, and indicator lights so parents and teachers can see when the filters need to be replaced."},{"title":"Install point of use filters","content":"Install point of use filters on any other taps used for drinking water, cooking or beverage preparation. Especially where under-sink filters are used, lead-bearing faucets should be replaced as well."},{"title":"Shut off taps","content":"Shut off taps where tests have detected lead in the water until they are fitted with lead-removing filters."},{"title":"Get the lead out","content":"Lead service lines should be removed as soon as possible at any child care center or school building that has one. Other lead-bearing fixtures or plumbing should be replaced over time where feasible. New school construction or renovation should use taps and fixtures that meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/caldev.pirg-test.com\/news\/cap\/statement-gov-newsom-signs-bill-create-nations-most-stringent-lead-leaching-limit-faucets\">strictest lead-free standards<\/a>, and include adequate hydration stations for students and staff."},{"title":"Test the taps","content":"After preventive steps are taken, test taps to ensure that lead levels do not exceed <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/138\/1\/e20161493\"><strong>1 part per billion<\/strong><\/a>, the limit recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics."}]}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"It is crucial to take these steps at all taps used for drinking or cooking, not just those in which tests have confirmed the presence of lead. Because lead testing is highly variable, the water from a fountain or faucet can be <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26896965\/\">\u201chighly hazardous\u201d<\/a> even if several samples fail to detect lead. As long as there is lead in the plumbing or pipes, any tap without a filter can serve lead-laced water to our kids.","":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<h3>Step 3: Do the math<\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-section-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\r\n\r\nHere\u2019s the great news: we can prevent lead contamination with just a small fraction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/learningpolicyinstitute.org\/blog\/covid-analysis-american-rescue-plan-act-2021\">nearly $110 billion<\/a> in federal stimulus funds that school districts are now receiving. These Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds can be used to reduce \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/oese.ed.gov\/files\/2021\/03\/FINAL_ARP-ESSER-FACT-SHEET.pdf\">exposure to environmental health hazards<\/a>,\u201d such as lead contamination of drinking water. You can see how much of this funding your school district is expected to receive <a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/HR133ESSERStimulusAllocations\/ESSERIIIII?:showVizHome=n&amp;:embed=y#2\">here<\/a>. (See the \u201cESSER III\u201d tab.)\r\n\r\nHydration stations with filters cost roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecocenter.org\/filter-first-ensuring-safe-and-lead-free-drinking-water-schools-filtered-drinking-water-stations\">$3,000<\/a> (including installation), based on the experience of school districts in Michigan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/clean-water-trust-approves-675000-in-school-water-improvement-grants-in-first-round\">Massachusetts<\/a>.
