Passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in May, the law designates inclined sleepers and crib bumpers as hazardous under the <a href=\"http:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/quicksearch\/get.plx?title=15&amp;section=2057\">Consumer Product Safety Act<\/a> and bans them from being produced or sold, regardless of the date of manufacture, because of the risk of suffocation.\r\n\r\nInclined sleepers, aimed at babies up to 1 year old, have a sleep surface slanted greater than 10 degrees. Crib bumpers are padded and go inside a crib. Consumer advocates including U.S. PIRG Education Fund have been pushing for a ban on inclined sleepers for years.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/oversight-hearing-reveals-previously-unknown-infant-deaths-in-fisher-price-s\">More than<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2020\/04\/03\/2020-06142\/safety-standard-for-crib-bumpersliners#p-24\">200 infant deaths have been linked to inclined sleepers<\/a>,\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) last year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/content\/cpsc-approves-major-new-federal-safety-standard-for-infant-sleep-products\">ruled that inclined sleepers and other products<\/a>\u00a0marketed for sleep for infants younger than five months must meet the same federal safety standards required for cribs and similar products, starting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2021\/06\/23\/2021-12723\/safety-standard-for-infant-sleep-products\">in June<\/a>. The Safe Sleep for Babies Act goes further than the CPSC rules, primarily expanding the age the products are aimed at, from five months old under CPSC rules, to 1 year old under the new federal law.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2019, a U.S. PIRG Consumer Watchdog <a href=\"https:\/\/uspirgedfund.org\/feature\/usf\/recalled-infant-sleepers\">investigation<\/a> found that inclined sleepers that had been recalled were still being used in daycare centers in states across the country.
