A new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/petris.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Petris-Center-report-on-Indianas-healthcare-markets-for-LSA-100322.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that between 2008 and 2017, Indiana hospital prices increased by 45%, a rate higher than surrounding areas. During this timeframe, Indiana underwent significant merger activity resulting in consolidation in the hospital, physician and insurance markets. This Indiana study echoes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/en\/library\/research\/2012\/06\/the-impact-of-hospital-consolidation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrating the cost increases as a result of\u00a0 health care consolidation. When hospitals and physician practices merge, it reduces competition, resulting in increased prices for patients, and in some cases even decreases in the quality of care. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/03\/the-pandemic-will-fuel-consolidation-in-u-s-health-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> counters the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commonly accepted theory that mergers improve efficiencies and thereby lower costs.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not an issue just in Indiana. Across the nation, health care consolidation has been on the rise for the past two decades, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic likely to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/03\/the-pandemic-will-fuel-consolidation-in-u-s-health-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accelerate mergers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Policy solutions to address the impact of hospital mergers include greater enforcement of antitrust policy state and federal regulators when overseeing health care mergers.
