And making only slight \u2013 or merely cosmetic \u2013 improvements to dangerous products distracts from the need to quit using them entirely.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s exactly what\u2019s currently happening with methane gas (a.k.a. \u201cnatural gas\u201d). Methane gas is a major contributor to global warming, both in its original form and when it is burned. Nevertheless, gas producers have been working to come up with an \u201cenvironmentally friendly\u201d certification system for methane gas. And they are looking for help from the Biden administration, with the Department of Energy recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/biden-admin-works-green-natural-gas-us-vies-top-lng-spot-2023-03-03\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engaging in talks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with energy companies and representatives of other countries about the development of such a system.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dgccouncil.com\/principles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proponents of certification<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argue that it is important to have comprehensive, transparent and verifiable data on the emissions impact of methane gas production and transportation, based on independent analysis \u2013 not industry self-reporting. They are right about that, especially since the U.S. had the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/methane-emissions-from-oil-and-gas-operations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-highest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> methane emissions from the fossil fuel industry of any country in the world in 2021.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, at its root, the certification effort is aimed at helping U.S. producers sell more gas by creating a pathway for it to be marketed as \u201cgreen.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/biden-admin-works-green-natural-gas-us-vies-top-lng-spot-2023-03-03\/?taid=640280aa1e76680001c5dc98&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Reuters, gas could be certified as \u201clow- or no-carbon\u201d if the producer either \u201creduced greenhouse gas emissions associated with getting it to market\u201d or bought \u201ccarbon offsets to cut its net climate impact.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both routes to certification are Band-Aids at best, and at worst a dangerous diversion. Cutting methane leaks is critical: gas producers should be required to do it, not given extra credit for it.\u00a0 But the confirmation of reductions would depend on effective monitoring and verification, both of which have proven tricky when it comes to methane leakage. (The federal government has long underestimated methane leakage from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/methane-studies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gas operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/why-are-epa-methane-estimates-so-low-its-guesswork\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local gas distribution systems in cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) And the industry has a track record of installing solutions to reduce leakage that they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/11\/07\/methane-equipment-cut-emissions-failing-advocates-say\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fail to maintain and keep functioning, or that simply don\u2019t work.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second route \u2013 purchasing carbon \u201coffsets\u201d \u2013 is even more problematic. Buying a carbon offset means paying someone, somewhere else, to reduce their climate emissions so that you can continue to pollute. At best, offsets are difficult to monitor and verify, and at worst, they can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jan\/18\/revealed-forest-carbon-offsets-biggest-provider-worthless-verra-aoe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worthless<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Carbon offsets have emerged as a major <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/energy-transition\/110922-cop27-un-slams-use-of-greenwashing-offsets-ahead-of-direct-abatement-actions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenwashing tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/internationaldevelopment\/2023\/01\/26\/the-verra-scandal-explained-why-avoided-deforestation-credits-are-hazardous\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ripe for abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, perhaps most importantly, the certification scheme does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address the emissions from actually burning the gas, which, after all, is the whole point of producing gas in the first place, and represents its biggest environmental problem.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, the U.S. produced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/ng\/ng_prod_sum_a_EPG0_FGW_mmcf_a.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43.37 trillion cubic feet of methane gas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If all of that were burned, the resulting climate pollution would exceed the annual emissions of all of America\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/data\/eia860m\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">532 active coal-fired power plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So even if the gas industry eliminated the pollution from producing and transporting that gas \u2013 likely impossible \u2013 or bought high-quality carbon offsets, emissions from our consumption of gas would still continue to drive global warming.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methane gas should never be certified as \u201cgreen,\u201d \u201csustainable\u201d or \u201cresponsible,\u201d because it is none of those things. Putting a green stamp on gas misleads the public about the true environmental harm of methane gas and gives license to the U.S. and gas companies to continue exporting carbon-intensive energy around the world.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than giving cover to the fossil fuel industry to engage in greenwashing, the U.S. should focus on solutions that reduce our dependence on gas, such as ending subsidies for fossil fuels, ending investments in new fossil fuel production capacity, and incentivizing the growth and use of renewable energy technologies.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no such thing as a safe cigarette. And there is no climate-safe way to produce and consume fossil fuels. To pretend otherwise is to put ourselves, and our future, at risk.
