Georgia PIRG Education Fund<\/p>\n

Hundreds of U.S. nursing homes this\u00a0year are reporting their very first cases\u00a0of COVID-19 after avoiding any cases\u00a0all of last year.

\nThat surprising revelation is among the\u00a0findings of a new analysis of\u00a0government data by U.S. PIRG\u00a0Education Fund and Frontier Group.\u00a0The nation\u2019s 15,000 nursing homes were\u00a0among the early hotspots as the\u00a0pandemic started tearing through the\u00a0United States a year ago. While nursing\u00a0homes contain less than one-half of 1\u00a0percent of the U.S. population, they\u2019ve\u00a0produced 2 percent of COVID cases and\u00a024 percent of deaths.

\nThe devastation, while horrible, made\u00a0sense. Residents are in nursing homes\u00a0round-the-clock, the environment is\u00a0dense, residents are generally older and\u00a0in poorer health than the overall\u00a0population, and staff can\u2019t socially\u00a0distance from residents when they\u2019re\u00a0feeding or bathing them or giving them\u00a0medication.\u00a0The high number of nursing homes that\u00a0experienced their very first cases of\u00a0COVID-19 this year \u2014 while fending them off during the horror of 2020 \u2014 is\u00a0among the clear indications that this\u00a0pandemic isn\u2019t over.<\/p>\n
