Our washing machines remove stains and odors from clothing, and they are big time-savers in today\u2019s modern life. But if washing machines aren\u2019t energy-efficient, they can needlessly waste a lot of energy and water. That\u2019s bad for the planet and our pocketbooks.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, there\u2019s currently an opportunity to increase their energy efficiency: last month, the Department of Energy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/commenton\/EERE-2017-BT-STD-0014-0060\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new efficiency requirements for clothes washers that would lower utility bills for consumers and reduce global warming pollution.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h1><b>What are the environmental benefits of stronger washing machine standards?<\/b><\/h1>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stronger washing machine efficiency standards would reduce energy use and water waste.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For both top-loading and front-loading machines, improved clothes washer efficiency would reduce the amount of energy\u2014electricity or gas\u2014used by water heaters and clothes dryers, since better-spun clothes dry faster.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposed clothes washer standards would prevent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appliance-standards.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Proposed%20Washing%20Machine%20Standards%20fact%20sheet%203-10-23.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">53 million metric tons of global warming pollution over 30 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s the climate equivalent of taking more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/energy\/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator#results\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 million cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - imagine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/196010\/total-number-of-registered-automobiles-in-the-us-by-state\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all the gasoline-powered passenger vehicles registered in Florida and Illinois<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - off the road for a year.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposed standards would also conserve water. With much of the western United States in a water crisis, eliminating needless water waste is critical. Clothes washers currently account for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appliance-standards.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Proposed%20Washing%20Machine%20Standards%20fact%20sheet%203-10-23.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16% of households\u2019 indoor water use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Under the Department of Energy\u2019s proposal, top-loading washers would use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appliance-standards.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Proposed%20Washing%20Machine%20Standards%20fact%20sheet%203-10-23.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31% less water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than units just meeting the current standard. Overall, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed standards would save <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appliance-standards.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Proposed%20Washing%20Machine%20Standards%20fact%20sheet%203-10-23.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 trillion gallons of water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is equivalent to the amount of water in nearly 4 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.<\/span>","":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_large_image","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_large_image":{"width":"narrow","image":43927,"caption_override":"Clothes washers currently account for 16% of households\u2019 indoor water use. The Department of Energy analysis shows that most renters have clothes washers in their homes, and they are much more likely to be top-loading models, which are generally less efficient.
