While the new law certainly is not perfect, it is the most significant federal investment in climate solutions to date. It includes billions of dollars of clean energy investments, mostly consisting of tax incentives and rebates for adopting technologies that will reduce emissions and break our dependence on fossil fuels. You may have heard about some of the big ones: new credits for adopting wind and solar energy, consumer rebates for electric vehicles and new tax incentives for manufacturers to make the tools necessary for the adoption of clean energy \u2013 from batteries, to wind turbines and solar panels.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s all great. It will make it easier for each of us to switch to an electric vehicle if we drive. It will make it more likely that the energy we use to power our homes is clean. And it will drive down greenhouse gas emissions, helping to tackle climate change. This is important stuff: We\u2019re already seeing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climate-indicators\/weather-climate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devastating effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of climate change, including more frequent and intense hurricanes, extreme wildfires and flooding. Unless we move swiftly to phase out our use of fossil fuels, those impacts will only get worse.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But beyond helping to address climate change, did you know that the Inflation Reduction Act could also help clean up the air inside your home? The bill includes brand new federal rebates for all-electric appliances, which can help you ditch your gas stove for a cleaner, healthier electric or induction model.<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<b>What\u2019s the problem with gas stoves?\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Americans love their gas stoves, but there\u2019s a hidden danger lurking in every one of them: Cooking with gas can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/insight\/gas-stoves-pollution-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">produce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> air pollution levels indoors that would exceed outdoor standards. That means that doing something as simple and innocuous as making a meal can release pollutants into our homes that studies have shown lead to the development of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2020\/12\/gas-stoves-hazardous-asthma.html#:~:text=A%202013%20meta%2Danalysis%20of,of%20being%20diagnosed%20with%20asthma.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in children, and may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9718623\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for those with preexisting respiratory illnesses. One report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/resources\/invisible-danger-gas-asthma-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the effects of using a gas stove around kids to those of second-hand smoke exposure.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooking with gas is also bad for the climate. The gas in our stoves is mostly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/10\/07\/1015460605\/gas-stove-emissions-climate-change-health-effects#:~:text=Gas%20stoves%20emit%20pollution%20into,%2C%20fracking%2C%20processing%20and%20transport.&amp;text=%22Methane%2C%20which%20is%20what%20natural,%2C%22%20says%20Seals%20with%20RMI.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a short-lived but super-potent greenhouse gas with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/methane-crucial-opportunity-climate-fight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the climate-warming harm of carbon dioxide.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric appliances, on the other hand, powered exclusively by electricity, promote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookingelectric.org\/homes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cleaner, safer and healthier homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They avoid the combustion of methane gas (or \u201cnatural gas\u201d) and significantly reduce the air pollutants that are emitted from cooking. Even better, electric appliances can be powered by 100% renewable energy (which, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, we will see a lot more of), further reducing climate emissions.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/edfund\/resources\/market-new-stove-consider-induction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Induction cooking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which like electric cooktops runs on electricity, i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s steadily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/07\/dining\/07induction.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winning over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Americans as the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sponsored.bostonglobe.com\/frigidaire\/induction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest and greatest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in cooking technology. Efficient, precise and safe, cooking on induction stoves provides numerous benefits not just for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eurokera.com\/blog\/professional-chefs-love-induction-cooking-and-you-should-too\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passionate chefs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and food lovers, but for the overall health and well-being of American families.<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<b>How much can the Inflation Reduction Act help you save on an electric or induction stove?<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, the new law includes $4.5 billion in funding for states to provide rebates for the purchase of new electric appliances, including ranges, cooktops, and wall ovens (both electric and induction). The Department of Energy will allocate funds to the states, and each state will have some discretion on how to use those funds, but will need to adhere to the guidelines set forth in the law and by the Department of Energy.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you qualify for the full rebate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/appliances\/inflation-reduction-act-and-new-electric-appliance-rebates-a3460144904\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you could save $840<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a new electric or induction stove, and up to an additional $500 if you are switching from gas or propane. That means, depending on the model you go with, you could get a brand new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carbonswitch.com\/induction-stove-costs-and-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">induction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/ranges\/best-electric-ranges-for-1000-dollars-or-less-a3593767621\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stove for as little as just a couple hundred dollars.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re switching from gas to electric or induction, you also might need to do some electrical upgrades in your kitchen. Induction and electric stoves need a 220-volt outlet, when a gas stove only uses a standard 120-volt. While this electrical work can be an added expense, the Inflation Reduction Act can help with that too. You can get a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewiringamerica.org\/policy\/inflation-reduction-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax credit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of up to $4,000 to upgrade your home\u2019s breaker box, and an additional credit of up to $2,500 for upgraded electrical wiring.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kitchen should be a place of bonding -- where Americans can come together with their loved ones to cook, eat and talk about their days. It should be a place where kids can sit at the table and do their homework. It definitely shouldn\u2019t be a place where our families are exposed to toxic pollution that can make us sick.
