Maybe you\u2019re making a written or mental list of resolutions. If you are, here are some suggestions to keep your wallet fatter and personal information safer. Cross<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/edfund\/people\/teresa-murray\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teresa Murray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\r\n<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sign up for text or email alerts with your bank and credit cards to notify you of larger or unexpected transactions.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use your bank\u2019s bill pay service to send checks to pay your bills. It\u2019s free. Check theft and forgery have been a problem this year. Checks sent directly from your bank are more difficult to forge and, better yet, the payments may be sent electronically.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimize your out-of-pocket health care costs. First, double check with your insurance plan that your favorite doctors and hospitals are still part of your health insurance network. If not, find new in-network providers.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know about your rights under the No Surprises Act which prohibits certain out-of-network doctors, labs, hospitals, etc., from sending you a surprise medical bill. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usdev.pirg-test.com\/blogs\/blog\/usp\/patient-guide-surprise-medical-billing-protections-you-can-use-now\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient Guide: Surprise medical billing protections you can use now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/resources\/smart-money-smart-kids-tips-for-teaching-financial-literacy-and-privacy-protection-to-kids-of-all-ages\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kids about money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review utility bills for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/edfund\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FTC-remarks-Junk-Fees-Teresa-Murray.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">junk fees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop accepting cookies every time you visit a website without looking more closely at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/articles\/cookie-pop-ups-why-you-should-think-twice-hitting-accept\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you\u2019re agreeing to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set all your devices to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/articles\/protecting-your-digital-privacy-tips-safeguarding-your-information\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the strongest privacy-protecting settings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to stop companies from harvesting and monetizing you and your device\u2019s data.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check credit or debit cards carefully for auto-payments for unwanted subscriptions, streaming services, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simplify your life with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/password-managers\/best-password-managers-review-digital-security-privacy-ease-of-use-a7337649384\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">password manager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s more secure, helps you keep track of passwords and also helps keep online accounts organized for the executor of your will.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re paying for identity theft protection or credit monitoring, cancel it.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usdev.pirg-test.com\/resources\/usp\/protect-yourself-against-new-account-id-theft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">credit freezes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualcreditreport.com\/index.action\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check your credit reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for any unauthorized activities. There are also free credit monitoring services you can sign up for instead of paying for them.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you check your credit report, make sure any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usdev.pirg-test.com\/blogs\/blog\/usp\/how-make-sure-your-credit-reports-don%E2%80%99t-include-paid-medical-debt-0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paid-off medical bills don't appear on your report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sign up for two-factor authentication for online financial accounts and primary email accounts. The code sent to your phone or email each time an attempted sign-in occurs from an unknown device protects you from hackers.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get a secondary checking account without much money in it to write checks to individuals, to link to PayPal, Venmo, etc. and to use for a debit card, if you have one. Many major banks offer free, no strings checking accounts. So do a lot of community banks and credit unions.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get your finances \u2013 your debts, your bills, your investments, etc. \u2013 in order. Here\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u-s-pirg\/how-i-got-my-finances-in-order-865f70bcd8e2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an overview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of things you can do.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u-s-pirg\/how-i-started-my-estate-and-end-of-life-planning-596655a888ac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estate and end-of-life planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy a
