Current federal rules, which have not been updated since the mid-1980s, require funeral homes to provide pricing in person, but not online. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last week said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/reports\/shopping-funeral-services-online\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that more than 60% of funeral homes have little or no pricing information on their websites. That\u2019s why the FTC is considering updating its rules to require the same disclosures online that are required in person.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At an open FTC hearing last week, many in the funeral home industry said people don\u2019t decide on a funeral home just based on price. While this may be true for many families, it\u2019s still better for consumers if funeral homes offer prices for various services online just like they do on a General Price List if you ask in person.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTC is expected to strengthen its funeral home pricing disclosure rules in the near future. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/topics\/truth-advertising\/funeral-rule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funeral Rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires funeral homes to give consumers itemized pricing and prohibits funeral homes from misrepresenting laws or burial requirements. Those include:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charging for embalming without permission;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requiring a casket to be purchased for cremation; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requiring consumers to pay for specific goods or services before getting other goods or services.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this topic in the news, it\u2019s a good time to consider tips to help you make the best decisions when a loved one has died.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Know your rights: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/topics\/truth-advertising\/funeral-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">current rule<\/a> requires six prices\/disclosures:<\/strong>\r\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basic services fee;\r\n2. casket price list;\r\n3. embalming;\r\n4. alternative containers for direct cremation;\r\n5. the outer burial container price list;and\r\n6. the consumer\u2019s right to select only the goods and services you want, without being required to pay for other goods and services you don\u2019t want.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Know the costs:<\/strong> Funerals generally cost between $7,000 and $10,000, including embalming, the viewing, the casket, the service and burial. Funerals with cremation typically cost $6,000 to $7,000. These expenses do not include a cemetery plot.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you\u2019re going to a funeral home to make arrangements,<\/strong> take a trusted friend or someone else not as close to the deceased person to help you make decisions with a clearer mind, ask questions and take notes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ask for what you\u2019re entitled to.<\/strong> The Funeral Rule requires that anyone can ask for and obtain, in person, anywhere (for example, at a hospital as well as a funeral home), a copy of the funeral home\u2019s General Price List.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Just because funeral homes don\u2019t currently have to give you prices<\/strong> over the phone or by email or online, it doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t ask. If a funeral home refuses and only wants to deal with you in person, perhaps you should cross that funeral home off your list, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkbook.org\/national\/consumers-notebook\/articles\/Survey-Few-Funeral-Homes-Post-Prices-Online-Consumer-Advocates-Urge-FTC-to-Require-It-7529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">checkbook.org<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Many General Price Lists are complicated and not easy to understand<\/strong>. You should also request a written, itemized estimate for arrangements you\u2019re considering.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>As difficult as it is, strongly consider reading<\/strong> about what\u2019s involved with a funeral and shopping around a bit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you actually need to plan arrangements hastily, or before your loved ones need to face that task.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ask for help.<\/strong> Some nonprofit funeral consumer organizations offer consumer education and resources to help you sort through your rights and options. The Funeral Consumers Alliance is the national umbrella group. Its website is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/funerals.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funerals.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can find \u200b\u200ba local alliance at <a href=\"http:\/\/funerals.org\/local-fca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funerals.org\/local-fca\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Know ways to reduce costs.<\/strong> If finances are an issue, it may be helpful to know that embalming, which can cost up to $1,000, isn\u2019t required if you\u2019re planning a service within one day. You also don\u2019t have to buy a casket from your funeral home. The casket can cost $1,000 to $5,000. The markup can be as much as five times the wholesale price. Or you don\u2019t have to use a casket all; you can choose a less expensive type of container.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Understand you can pre-plan services without pre-paying.<\/strong> A risk of a pre-paid plan: If the funeral home goes out of business or embezzles your money, you could face additional, unnecessary stress. pay for funeral expenses: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers and retirement plans sometimes offer resources.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honorably discharged veterans and their spouses may be eligible for burial in a national cemetery \u2013 there are 155 in 42 states.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Social Security Administration offers a small death benefit of $255 to a surviving spouse or
