But many of us, for a variety of reasons, do waste a lot of food. And it\u2019s not just a problem of uneaten leftovers or veggies going bad in the fridge: stores, restaurants, transportation companies and even farms themselves are significant sources of food waste. In fact, as a country, the U.S. wastes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2021-11\/from-farm-to-kitchen-the-environmental-impacts-of-u.s.-food-waste_508-tagged.pdf#page=3\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 1,000 pounds of food per person<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each year.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us learned to see food through the lens of scarcity: that there isn\u2019t enough to feed everyone and that people go hungry because insufficient supply increases prices, putting food outside people\u2019s financial reach. And while it is true that some people struggle to put enough food on the table, it is not because there isn\u2019t enough. There is more than enough food to go around. And that is more than enough reason to care about food waste.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2021-11\/from-farm-to-kitchen-the-environmental-impacts-of-u.s.-food-waste_508-tagged.pdf#page=3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throws away roughly 35% of its total food supply each year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All that wasted food could feed the tens of millions of hungry Americans many times over.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we waste food, we\u2019re throwing away everything that went into providing that food. In the U.S. alone, wasted food \u2013 whether grown or raised \u2013 results in a colossal waste of resources. Every year, the resources committed to wasted food <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2021-11\/from-farm-to-kitchen-the-environmental-impacts-of-u.s.-food-waste_508-tagged.pdf#page=3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Land:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over 140 million acres of agricultural land, an area the size of California and New York state combined;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.9 trillion gallons of fresh water, equivalent to the water use of well over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US\/PST045222\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a third of all U.S. households<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Energy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">664 terawatt-hours of energy, enough to power over 50 million U.S. homes for a year;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fertilizer: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 billion pounds of fertilizers, which the Environmental Protection Agency estimates is enough to grow <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the fruits, vegetables and grains grown and consumed in America each year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wasting food also has an enormous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2021-11\/from-farm-to-kitchen-the-environmental-impacts-of-u.s.-food-waste_508-tagged.pdf#page=3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental cost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the U.S., farmers use 778 million pounds of pesticides each year growing food that is later wasted, pesticides that can threaten <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.ea-test.com\/topics\/save-the-bees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollinators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/endangered-species\/about-endangered-species-protection-program\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endangered species<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (not to mention <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pesticide-science-and-assessing-pesticide-risks\/human-health-issues-related-pesticides#:~:text=Some%2C%20such%20as%20the%20organophosphates,endocrine%20system%20in%20the%20body.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The fertilizers used on wasted (and consumed) food can wash off of farmland and into waterways, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/nutrientpollution\/sources-and-solutions-agriculture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killing fish and other aquatic life and causing toxic algae blooms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Animals whose flesh we waste, and there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/22890292\/food-waste-meat-dairy-eggs-milk-animal-welfare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">billions and billions of them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, contribute to the widespread problem of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/other\/agricultural\/afo.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from industrial farming. And food waste drives climate change, with the production of wasted food and the waste itself contributing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/refed.org\/food-waste\/the-problem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4% of annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not just an American problem. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221219003411\/https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-consumption-production\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that, every year, one third of all food produced worldwide \u2013 1.3 billion metric tons of food worth about $1 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trillion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 goes to waste during harvesting and transportation or is thrown away. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/5-facts-about-food-waste-and-hunger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Food Programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now, the world produces enough food to nourish every child, woman and man on the planet. \u2026 All the food produced but never eaten would be sufficient to feed two billion people. That's more than twice the number of undernourished people across the globe.\u201d*<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as in the U.S., food waste has real impacts globally. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221219003411\/https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-consumption-production\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the food sector accounts for 30% of energy consumption and 22% of greenhouse gas emissions; food that goes to waste is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/196402\/icode\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 3.3 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. The land used to grow food that ends up wasted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/196402\/icode\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accounts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for nearly 30% of all agricultural land in the world. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/foodfeatures\/feeding-9-billion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses a huge proportion of global water supplies, is a major source of water pollution from fertilizer and pesticide runoff, and one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/196402\/icode\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest global threats to biodiversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that is to say, if we reduced the waste, we could (with the right distribution system) theoretically feed the world on the same amount of food we produce now \u2013 or even less. Less waste and a better distribution system would also let us handle a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2021-11\/from-farm-to-kitchen-the-environmental-impacts-of-u.s.-food-waste_508-tagged.pdf#page=3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likely population increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while shrinking the amount of land needed for new agriculture and reducing deforestation, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, water use and water pollution.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we achieved that, what else might become possible? By focusing less on generating more food and more on the wise use of the food we have, we could also concentrate on producing food that is better for us and better for the environment.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need a food system that \u2013 instead of incentivizing the production of ever-more low-quality food \u2013 prioritizes producing nutritious food for everyone and using everything that is produced.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One piece of the reform needed is implementable solutions. Recommendations from groups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/edfund\/resources\/the-fight-against-food-waste\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. PIRG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/refed.org\/food-waste\/the-solutions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReFED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include tracking waste, matching production and inventory to demand, finding uses for things that often get discarded, improving farming and distribution practices, and reshaping the way people interact with food. ReFED calculates that, each year in the U.S., their solutions could reduce food waste by 45 million tons, cut greenhouse gas emissions by 75 million metric tons, save 4 trillion gallons of water, and recover enough food to provide 4 billion meals to those in need, resulting in $73 billion in annual net financial benefit.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these kinds of solutions are already being implemented, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/edfund\/resources\/the-fight-against-food-waste\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and around the world. France, for instance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zerowasteeurope.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/zwe_11_2020_factsheet_france_en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed and then expanded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a law requiring grocery stores, large food service operations and other pieces of the food industry to donate unused food instead of throwing it away. A Nigerian inventor created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/23\/africa\/coldhubs-nigeria-food-supply-chain-hnk-spc-intl\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solar-powered cold storage system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help farmers keep produce fresh, waste less of it and sell more. And a Brazilian non-profit helps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yesmagazine.org\/social-justice\/2020\/10\/09\/food-waste-brazil-communities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teach people how to use every part of the food they buy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that nothing goes to waste.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we need large-scale solutions, not just community-by-community efforts, which will require a collective recognition of the facts and the problem. Because the biggest barrier to ending hunger in the U.S. and around the world is our failure, thus far, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/01\/31\/1152739801\/thomas-greenfield-famine-displacement-somalia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get the food we have to where it\u2019s needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, letting it go to waste
