In 2022, the Department of Energy (DOE) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/04\/26\/1094871850\/light-bulbs-led-energy-incandescent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adopted energy efficiency requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will all but ban incandescent and many fluorescent bulbs, and make LEDs (light-emitting diodes) the default option for most of us. That\u2019s great, because LEDs are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/home\/kitchen-and-household\/buying-led-bulbs-good-but-heres-5-things-to-consider-first\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much, much more efficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than incandescent and even fluorescent bulbs. In fact, the DOE estimates that if the U.S. fully adopted the most efficient LEDs, America could save the equivalent of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/ssl\/led-adoption-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of all the electricity used in U.S. buildings in 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Switching to LEDs means you\u2019ll use less energy and reduce your utility bills. It also means less need for fossil fuel power plants, reducing the damage to our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.fg-test.com\/resources\/trouble-air-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and environment.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But LEDs are quite different from incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs \u2013 in most ways, far better \u2013\u00a0 but there are some things you need to know to enjoy their lighting benefits in addition to their energy and cost savings. From brightness to color, LEDs provide as much or more choice and control over your lighting as incandescents and fluorescents. There are even \u201csmart\u201d LEDs you can even control from your phone, adjusting color, brightness, schedules or even syncing them to music. Here are some tips to help you pick the right bulb.<\/span>\r\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are lumens? The brightness of the LED<\/span><\/h1>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first metric to know about when buying LED bulbs is <\/span><b>lumens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/lumens-and-lighting-facts-label\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lumens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a measurement of brightness (more lumens = higher brightness), and the first thing you should look for to decide if a given LED will meet your needs.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less-efficient bulbs, like incandescents and fluorescents, get brighter as they use more power (which is why we often describe the brightness of incandescent bulbs in watts, a unit of power).\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEDs, on the other hand, don\u2019t necessarily require more power to be brighter, so they are measured with lumens. Manufacturers are required to label LEDs with their brightness in lumens, so this should be easy to find on the box. The color of the LED<\/span><\/h1>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second, crucial aspect of LEDs is their color. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/home.howstuffworks.com\/light-bulb1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incandescent bulbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are yellow and warm (because, remember, they\u2019re literally glowing with heat) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/home.howstuffworks.com\/fluorescent-lamp2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluorescent bulbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are generally made to be somewhat yellow, LEDs can come in a much wider range of colors. This gives you much more control over the light and color you want, but it can be confusing, since the other technologies don\u2019t have these options. <\/span><b>Kelvin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(abbreviated K) is the way the color of LEDs is specified, with lower Kelvin values meaning light that is warmer (more yellow and orange) and higher Kelvin values indicating cooler, bluer light. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/home\/kitchen-and-household\/should-you-buy-warm-or-cool-lights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNET<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.lighting.philips.com\/consumer\/led-lights\/warm-led-light\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gelighting.com\/inform\/how-choose-led-light-bulbs-your-home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and others have guides to choosing the right color of light, but in general:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a <\/span><b>warm, amber-y light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like in a den or living room with the lights down low), look for <\/span><b>2,200K or 2,300K LEDs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a <\/span><b>soft yellow-white light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dining room, living room, bedroom), look for <\/span><b>2,700K-3,000K LEDs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. CRI is measured on a scale from 1 to 100, with higher values indicating that objects will look more like they do under natural sunlight. Manufacturers are not required to publicize the CRI of an LED, though they often do, and it isn\u2019t always the most useful or reliable data point because it is based on a small number of color samples and the results are averaged (there are potentially better standards in the works). Though you can\u2019t rely on CRI too much, look for higher CRI values if possible (above 90 is better) and consider checking customer reviews for comments about color rendering.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions to ask when buying LEDs<\/span><\/h1>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEDs are not a new technology, but their use for space lighting (versus just as indicator lights) is relatively new, and the technology is quickly evolving and improving even as prices drop.
