Despite a federal ban on balance billing (those expensive bills from out-of-network providers), as many as 1 in 5 Americans<\/a> are still receiving surprise medical bills.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe fought hard for patient protections from out-of-network care that we can\u2019t avoid, or didn\u2019t know we were getting,\u201d said Patricia Kelmar,<\/a> U.S. PIRG's health care campaigns director. \u201cIt\u2019s infuriating to know that some providers are still sending those now illegal bills.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just because you receive this type of bill doesn't mean you need to pay it.
