It is obvious that the cleanup effort is going to be a challenge, and residents are rightfully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/angry-ohio-townspeople-seek-answers-trains-toxic-spill-2023-02-16\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how the vinyl chloride (which is linked to cancer) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ohio-train-derailment-toxic-chemicals-list-epa-1780805\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that potentially went up in flames may adversely affect their lives.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how thorough the cleanup effort is, adverse effects are likely to linger for years to come.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On any given day, this could easily happen again. About 12,000 trains carry hazardous materials through U.S. towns and cities each day. Rail cars <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/feb\/11\/ohio-train-derailment-wake-up-call?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transport<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 4.5 million tons of toxic chemicals through U.S. communities every year.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all heard that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So how can we prevent future incidents involving trains full of hazardous or explosive materials?<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/articles\/epa-could-protect-communities-from-disasters-like-ohio-train-wreck\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/408125-trump-admin-rolls-back-obama-oil-train-safety-rule\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Transportation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should tighten up safety rules to ensure that production and transportation of hazardous materials is as safe as possible. But we need to recognize that, given the nature of these chemicals, these processes will never be completely safe.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which raises the question: Why are we transporting so many hazardous materials anyway?\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The obvious answer is that we use them to make a lot of stuff. But do we need to?<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at the chemicals involved in the East Palestine incident. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/TSP\/ToxFAQs\/ToxFAQsDetails.aspx?faqid=281&amp;toxid=51\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vinyl chloride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a colorless gas that can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause nerve damage, disrupt the immune system, damage the circulatory system or cause liver cancer, is used to make a variety of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org\/chemicals\/polyvinyl-chloride\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plastic products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including plastic bottles and containers, shrink wrap, cling film, single-use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pvc.org\/pvc-applications\/pvc-in-packaging\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trays and containers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the plastic label sleeves on disposable drink bottles.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vinyl chloride is often used to make <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Poly%28vinyl%20chloride%29\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polyvinyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This plastic is used in products <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org\/chemicals\/polyvinyl-chloride\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plastic bottles and containers, shrink wrap, and different kinds of packaging, as well as building and construction products, tubing and more. It can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation, as well as asthma.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.novachem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/SCLAIRNotColoured_RP_AMER_EN.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polyethylene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/polyethylene\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely used<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form of plastic in the world. It is used in many everyday products, including single-use bags and packaging, clear food and product wrap, as well as bottles, containers and more. As a solid plastic, it is considered non-hazardous. But exposure to polyethylene in its fine dust form can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation, and inhaling polyethylene-filled smoke is considered hazardous.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/TSP\/substances\/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=240\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propylene glycol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to make polyester (plastic), as an antifreeze and deicer, to absorb water, and as a solvent. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/polyester\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polyester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the main component of PET plastic, which is used to make disposable products including packaging and bottles, as well as many synthetic fabrics. In large quantities, propylene glycol can increase the amount of acid in the body or irritate the skin. It can also affect the respiratory system.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/8117\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diethylene glycol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to retain or absorb moisture, as a lubricant and a solvent, and in the production of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/polyester\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polyesters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 which are used in things such as disposable beverage bottles and synthetic fabrics. It can damage the kidneys, liver and central nervous system, and may cause death.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noticing a pattern here? All of these toxic chemicals, in some form or another, are used to make the ubiquitous plastics around us. In fact, seven out of the eight types of toxic materials that escaped from the derailed train in Ohio are used for that purpose.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is nearly impossible to avoid disposable plastic packaging or other single-use plastics in the United States. Look at the shelves at your local grocery store. As a result, every <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/resources\/trash-in-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15.5 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Americans throw out enough plastic to fill the largest NFL stadium in the country, AT&amp;T Stadium (the home of the Dallas Cowboys), and the pile of pollution grows larger every year.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of that plastic comes from a growing petrochemical industry doubling down on production. Indeed, as clean energy adoption accelerates in the U.S., the fossil fuel industry is betting big on plastic. Since 2010, companies have invested more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/the-plastics-pipeline-a-surge-of-new-production-is-on-the-way\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$200 billion in 333 plastic and other chemical projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t have to use this much plastic. We can shift away from this wasteful, polluting and costly system to a circular material economy that produces zero waste, conserves natural resources and limits pollution and global warming emissions. We\u2019re already moving in this direction: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/resources\/reducing-plastic-waste-in-the-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 30%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Americans live in a state that currently bans some type of single-use plastic. To match the scale of the problem, we need more states to follow.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that happens, we would need far fewer chemicals such as those on the Norfolk Southern train that derailed in Ohio to produce plastics. So, far fewer chemicals would need to be transported through our communities, lowering the risk of future events like those in East
