We\u2019re here to help.<\/span>\r\n<h2>Should I be reading privacy policies?<\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It's worth it reading privacy policies. These documents tell you about a company's data practices. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When companies misuse your data, it can cause big problems for you, and privacy policies are tools that help you identify the data and privacy risks of using a service. They can also tell you how to get some control over your data.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0A really bad privacy policy tells you a lot about a company - and can help you identify companies that aren\u2019t worth doing business with at all.<\/span>\r\n<h2>How to read a privacy policy<\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you can dig into the fine print with our key questions and search terms, you need to locate it.<\/span>\r\n<h3>How to find a privacy policy<\/h3>\r\nBusinesses are legally required to post privacy policies, but that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re always easy to find. If you can\u2019t find a privacy policy at all, it\u2019s better to move on and find a company that takes your privacy and safety more seriously.\r\n<h4>Finding privacy policies on websites<\/h4>\r\nTo find the privacy policy of just about any business or a particular website, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scroll down to the very bottom of the site\u2019s homepage. Among the small text down there you should see a link that says \u201cprivacy policy\u201d, \u201cprivacy notice\u201d, \u201cprivacy information\u201d or even just the word \u201cprivacy\u201d. This is what you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes a privacy policy may also be linked to in a site\u2019s \u201cAbout Us\u201d page. And if all else fails, you can try searching the name of the company and the words \u201cprivacy policy\u201d online.<\/span>\r\n<h4>Finding app privacy policies<\/h4>\r\nTo find an app\u2019s privacy policy, look at the listing inside the app store. There should be a link to the app developer\u2019s privacy policy somewhere in the app description.\r\n\r\n<em>Note:<\/em> If you\u2019re downloading an app from Google or Apple, you\u2019ll notice they\u2019ve both started displaying summaries of app privacy policies. These are nice, but you still want to find the privacy policy. These descriptions are not 100% reliable - the app developers are the ones filling them out - and it\u2019s likely they\u2019re missing details that really matter.\r\n<h5>Find a privacy policy in the Apple app store:<\/h5>\r\nLook at the app\u2019s listing and scroll down until you see \u201cApp Privacy\u201d. Right above the summary of the app\u2019s data usage, it should have a link to the developer\u2019s privacy policy in small text. That\u2019s what you want.\r\n<h5>Find a privacy policy in the Google app store:<\/h5>\r\nLook at the app\u2019s listing and scroll down until you see \u201cData safety\u201d. Click the arrow or \u201csee more\u201d to look at the summary of the app\u2019s data collection and security practices. Don\u2019t stop there! At the bottom, there should be small text with a link to the developer's privacy policy. That\u2019s what you want.\r\n<h5>Find a privacy policy for an Amazon Alexa Skill:<\/h5>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding the privacy policy for an Alexa Skill can be particularly challenging. Not all Skills developers include a link to their privacy policy in the listing itself, which is a terrible practice. <\/span><b>Don\u2019t download a Skill that you can\u2019t find a privacy policy for.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start, look at the Skill\u2019s listing in Amazon\u2019s Alexa Skills store. At the bottom of the Skill\u2019s page, there may be a privacy policy link under \u201cSkill Details\u201d. If it\u2019s not there, read the entirety of the Skill\u2019s description - you may find a link to the privacy policy anywhere in the text, but most commonly it will be towards the end, if it\u2019s offered at all.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can\u2019t find it there, and you\u2019re really set on downloading that Skill, do a web search for the Skill\u2019s name and \u201cprivacy policy\u201d and see what you can find.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h3>Reading a privacy policy<\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an ideal world, you\u2019d sit down and read the entire privacy policy. But these documents are long and hard to read, often on purpose, so at the very least you want to read enough to find the answers to key questions.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h4><strong>Key questions to answer when reading a privacy policy<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What data is the company gathering on me?<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is it using it for?<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it selling or sharing my data with other parties?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privacy policies usually follow a standard outline. Let\u2019s walk through reading one together.<\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong><strong>What services does the privacy policy cover?\r\n<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first few paragraphs of most privacy policies explain what\u2019s covered in the document, and what companies and services the privacy policy applies to. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure it matches your expectations. Companies may have multiple privacy policies for their different products. It\u2019s common for a business that has both a website and an app to have entirely separate privacy policies for the two, or for a large company with multiple divisions or services to have a different privacy policy for each one.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may learn other surprising things in this section, like that one of your favorite websites is owned by a company you\u2019ve never heard of. That\u2019s not necessarily a red flag on its own, but it may indicate your data is getting shared at a larger scale than you realized.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\u00a0<strong>What information is the company collecting about you?\r\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next section is really key. It\u2019s typically called something like \u201cyour information\u201d or \u201cdata we collect about you\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here you want to see if the company is gathering more data about you than it needs. If you\u2019re ordering food through a delivery app, it makes sense it\u2019d have your address. But if it\u2019s getting access to your entire personal contacts list, that\u2019s unnecessary, and a red flag. Anything that seems weird probably is.\u00a0<\/span><b>There are certain types of data you want to pay special attention to<\/b> like location data, anything gathered by cameras or microphones, your web browsing history, or certain kinds of device information like your \"advertising ID\".\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<b>Look out for certain tracking technologies, too<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some apps and sites use <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.pirg-test.com\/articles\/cookie-pop-ups-why-you-should-think-twice-hitting-accept\/\">tools designed to gather<\/a> way too much data about you, like cookies, web beacons, pixels and software development kits. If the privacy policy talks about using these, that's almost definitely a red flag.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong><strong>How is your data being used?\r\n<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, the next section of the privacy policy will explain what the company does with your data. It\u2019s likely called something like \u201chow we use your information\u201d or \u201cour data use\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies will list a lot of ways they use your data. Some uses are totally legitimate, and others are cause for concern.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legitimate uses include \u201cproviding our services\u201d or \u201cresponding to your requests\u201d. That\u2019s just using your data to give you what you\u2019re expecting to get. Other generally harmless uses include \u201cimproving our services\u201d and \u201cdetecting fraud\u201d. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may start getting a little suspicious about services that use your data for \u201canalyzing traffic\u201d and \u201cmarket research\u201d. These don\u2019t necessarily guarantee your data is being sold and shared, but it\u2019s possible.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest red flag to watch out for is mentions of advertising. If a privacy policy states it uses your data for\u00a0 \u201cpersonalized\u201d, \u201ctargeted\u201d, \u201cbehavioral\u201d or \u201cinterest-based\u201d advertising, this is a problem. It almost certainly means a lot of other companies are getting access to your data that don\u2019t have your best interests at heart, or very good security measures in place to protect your data once they have it.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong><strong>Who else is getting your data?\r\n<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, privacy policies likely have a section called \u201cinformation sharing\u201d, \u201chow we share your data\u201d or even just \u201cour partners\u201d. This is where they outline the other companies that get your data.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mentions of both selling and sharing your data are generally red flags. Sharing may sound more innocent than selling, but a company \u201csharing\u201d your data is almost always just a fancy way of saying they sell it.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies often give vague classes of entities they share\/sell your data with, like \u201cpartners\u201d, \u201caffiliates\u201d, \u201cservice providers\u201d, \u201cthird parties\u201d or \u201cadvertisers\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You want a privacy policy to give you a specific list of specific companies that are getting your data.<\/strong> And again, any time advertisers are involved it means your data is a lot less safe and secure.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>What can you do to protect your data?\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of privacy policies, companies generally include some nod to your rights or choices. Many will include a way for you to opt out of some amount of data collection and sharing, even if it\u2019s not very comprehensive. Some may refer you to a separate \u201ccookie policy\u201d to exercise your choices regarding cookies. They may be willing to help you ensure you\u2019ve put all your settings to the highest possible protection.<\/span>\r\n<h3><strong>How to skim a privacy policy<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nDoing a more systematic reading of a privacy policy is always better. But i<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f you\u2019re really short on time, we recommend doing a ctrl+f search for every mention of the word \u201cdata\u201d or \u201cinformation\u201d and reading those sentences. Look for anything that doesn\u2019t make sense to you - data the company doesn\u2019t need, or weird ways they use your information. Search for mentions of \u201cadvertising\u201d - this can especially indicate bad news - and look for the word \u201copt\u201d to find out how you can opt out of data collection.
