Legislation to phase out the use of inefficient mercury-containing lighting passed the Rhode Island House of Representatives on June 6th.

Sponsored by Representative Art Handy, H 5550 phases out the sale of fluorescent bulbs in Rhode Island by 2025. If passed by the Senate and signed by Governor McKee, Rhode Island will join the growing ranks of states transitioning to lighting that’s more energy efficient and nontoxic.

Rhode Island consumers have the potential to save $20 million dollars in electricity bill savings in 2030 as a result of phasing out fluorescent bulbs in favor of more efficient LEDs.
